The sky-father cognate thing (Zeus Pater, Dyaus Pitr, Jupiter) is the detail that reframes the whole antimemetic idea for me. What if that convergence wasn't three separate gods with one lucky enough to survive assimilation, but three cultures independently sensing the same current and just not realizing they were describing the same thing?

The real forgetting might not be losing track of El or Asherah specifically. It might be forgetting that syncretism was recognition the whole time, not conquest. Every time a newer god absorbed an older one, it wasn't devouring a rival so much as finally admitting they were pointing at the same referent all along. The horror isn't that something huge got erased. It's that erasure was never actually necessary, since there was only ever the one thing being renamed, over and over.
